What I’m Listening To: The Best Creative Podcasts

Hiya! I gotta tell you guys, I am becoming a podcast fiend. I listen to them ALL the time! I love them because I can learn new things while I get ready, work or cook (haha, yea right, I never cook!). They’re also great for long plane rides or when you’re stuck in traffic. Plus when I’m feeling a little isolated in my office, it helps me feel like I’m having some social interaction (though there’s nothing like the real thing!).

The other day, I was talking to my sister-in-law about podcasts (hi, Miranda!) and when I opened my podcast app and starting naming all my favorites, I realized that I listen to SO MANY. I talked about them for legit an entire hour.

And even though I already listen to a ton, I am always looking for more. So let me know about your favorite podcasts (PLEASE!). They don’t have to be creative or freelance related (I listen to tons of true crime / humanity stories / self-help / etc. podcasts). If you love it, send it my way! I’ll try it out!

MY FAVORITES
Below are my top creative listens. I listen to every episode as soon as it drops, and in many cases, I’ve gone back and listened to all the archives too.

Creative Pep Talk
In this current new fave, (thx Jeff Winkle for the reco!), Andy J. Miller helps creatives strike the balance between art and business through ridiculous analogies, personal stories and artist interviews.

Recent episodes include: “How to Create Art People Crave,” “The Power in Your Story,” “4 Creative Career Lessons that Changed My Life”

Weird Work
The professional working world seems typical. At your desk by 9. Sneak out at 5. Sit in traffic. Do it all again tomorrow. But when you live the freelance life, you see first-hand that it’s a big world out there, and people’s lives (and livelihoods) are far weirder than we could have imagined. This podcast looks at all the jobs that leave us saying… “Wait, you make money doing that?”

Recent episodes include: “I turn accidental fur into high fashion,” “I make money off of Lizard People,” “I’m a weed nun”

TED Talks Daily
Who doesn’t love TED talks? Hear thought-provoking ideas on every subject imaginable—from Artificial Intelligence to Zoology, and everything in between—given by the world’s leading thinkers and doers. GREAT way to grow your brain and spark creativity!

Recent episodes include: “How I use the drum to tell my story,” “Is the world getting better or worse?,” “How we need to remake the internet”

99% Invisible
99% Invisible is about all the thought that goes into the things we don’t think about—the unnoticed architecture and design that shape our world.

Recent episodes include: “The Hair Chart,” “Fordlandia,” “Biomimicry”

MORE TO TRY
Here’s some other podcasts geared toward creatives that sound interesting, but I haven’t listened to enough episodes to highly recommend. If you have, let me know what you think!
